- Cancel existing insurance at close of escrow to become effective on date of move. Transfer fire and damage insurance on personal property and household goods so that they will remain covered enroute and at your new home.
- Notify your children's school(s) of your intended move. Secure transcripts or letters regarding your child's status at school.
- Check your drycleaner, laundry and shoe repair services for possible forgotten items.
- Send your forwarding address to your local Post Office.
- Send change of address cards (available at any Post Office) to:
- Magazines and other periodicals
- Insurance company or companies
- Bank(s) and Savings & Loans
- Relatives and friends
- Credit cards and department stores
- Any company from which you receive dividends or interest payments
- Reduce the number of items you are going to move. Start depleting your supply of canned and frozen goods and establish a "Throw-Away Pile" and "Give-Away Pile", so you won't move unwanted items.
- Set up a moving crew. Either make arrangements for those to help you move yourself, or shop around for a moving company 3 to 6 weeks prior to your move.
- Don't overlook special moving requirements for any household pets. A moving company can inform you of any state regulations for pet entry.
- Leave keys for your present property with your realtor or neighbors.
- BE SURE TO CHANGE THE LOCKS ON YOUR NEW PROPERTY. During the sales process, numerous people from realtors to contractors may have a copy of the key. Therefore, it is a good idea to change the locks upon close of escrow. Also if applicable, be sure to change your alarm code.
We will be happy to answer any questions or render any further assistance you might require to ease the move to your new residence.
